definitionI've created a watercolor sketch to try to understand the hues and value families found in the photo. I like my pigment selection. I'm working with ultramarine for the shadows, it sets off that naples yellow. Mars violet perfect match for the robe. I know the violin needs richer tones perhaps some ochre. I'm questioning the values of the face with the burnt sienna and ultramarine against that Tuscan panorama in particular. What do you see?

summary"Martina" is a divided but accomplished watercolor whose central tension is a mismatch of finish rather than of skill. The face and hair achieve genuine portraiture—low-keyed, intimate, with warm naples yellow on the lit cheek and convincing form-shadow in the sockets and jaw—while the mars violet robe carries real mass and modulation. The color architecture succeeds: the complementary hum of violet against the ultramarine-and-naples-yellow vineyard, the quieted wall that lets the figure hold as the still center of a shimmering field. Yet the violin, sitting dead center beneath the focal face, remains described to a sketch's standard in a picture that now finishes to a portrait's standard, and no amount of darkening resolves what is fundamentally a discrepancy of resolution rather than value. The painting's core problem is one of declaration: it began as a hue-and-value study, then the face promoted itself to finished work without the rest of the picture agreeing to follow, producing a work whose parts disagree about what they are.
